The NAE plays a pivotal role in the knowledge and innovation ecosystem by orchestrating action together with parties who rally behind common goals. The ambition is to take timely action around selected technology-based innovation options for societal challenges, and strengthen the knowledge and innovation ecosystem. This is an orchestrating role, getting the best out of the Dutch ecosystem.
Approach
It is not enough just to identify and discuss societal transitions coming our way and generate ideas for innovative approaches. The major challenges we face together require systemic changes and a holistic cross-functional and cross-organisational approach. Industry, knowledge institutions and government organisations, as well as citizens and politicians, must act together in finding innovative solutions. This requires a practical approach to creating and implementing viable innovative solutions based on engineering and applied science. In doing so, it is essential that each stakeholder contributes knowledge, experience and capabilities and encourages broad societal acceptance based on a balanced assessment of benefits and risks.
The NAE Pivot to Action approach is to develop concrete programmes and projects bringing together stakeholders around specific engineering themes needed to achieve breakthroughs. At the same time, identified best practices will be leveraged to strengthen the knowledge and innovation ecosystem. The Pivot role will follow a practical and efficient approach, with a focus on impact by orchestrating concrete action.
