The NAE takes a Pivot role in the knowledge and innovation ecosystem by orchestrating the action of parties rallying behind common goals. The ambition is to translate selected engineering and innovation options for societal challenges into timely actions, and to strengthen the knowledge and innovation ecosystem. This is an orchestrating role, getting the best out of the Dutch ecosystem.
Approach
It is not sufficient to merely identify and discuss societal transitions that come our way, and to generate ideas for innovative approaches to address them. The major challenges we face together require systemic and holistic cross-functional and cross-organizational approaches. Industry and start-ups, knowledge institutes and governmental organizations, as well as citizens and politicians need to create and embrace innovative solutions. This means taking a practical approach to create and implement viable engineering and applied science based innovative solutions, on the basis of knowledge, experience, and capabilities that each stakeholder contributes, and ensuring broad acceptance based on a balanced assessment of benefits and risks.
The NAE Pivot to Action approach is to develop concrete programs and projects in which stakeholders are brought together around specific engineering themes that are necessary to achieve breakthroughs. At the same time, best practices identified will be leveraged to strengthen the knowledge and innovation ecosystem. The Pivot role will take a lean approach, with a focus on having impact by orchestrating concrete action.
